Application Notes
Surface profile measurement of oil seals using a laser microscope
Oil seal
Application
Automobile oil seals are usually attached to the end face of the rotating part of a unit. The oil seals help to prevent oil leakage or the entry of small foreign objects into the engine. Therefore, the shape and roughness of the oil seal surface are strictly managed so that the attaching part is securely sealed. Because oil seals are generally made of rubber, using contact-type measurement equipment may affect their surface profile and lead to inaccurate data.
The Olympus solution
Noncontact measurement using the LEXT OLS5000 3D laser scanning microscope
Product features
- Thanks to the system’s contact-free measurement function, the material of the test object is not damaged, even if it is soft.
- Surface roughness can be measured to provide more accurate data.
- Even rounded test objects can be accurately measured.
