The Challenge

The Evident Challenge consists of a variety of code- and math-based questions and puzzles that vary in difficulty. Each question has a different point value and is related to the work we do at Evident. The answers will be evaluated by a panel of experts who will look at criteria such as the quality of the code and architecture.

The challenge will take place in GitHub. Each participant will have one week to complete the challenge and can change or modify their answers as much as they like during this period. Only the final submission when the challenge closes will be evaluated by the judges.

What is the Evident Challenge?

The Evident Challenge is a competition to find the next great software developer. The challenge involves a series of code- and math-based questions that will be posted to GitHub. The answers will also be entered in GitHub, and the quality of the coding and architecture will be judged by a panel of experts.

Is the Evident Challenge an in-person or virtual competition?

The challenge is hosted online and will take place in May 2023.

Who can participate, and who can win?

Anyone is welcome to enter, though the challenge is designed for software and coding students. Registrants must be at least 18 years old. Students registered at a Quebec college or university recognized by the Ministère de l'Éducation and the Ministère de l'Enseignement supérieur du Québec are eligible to win the prize.

When is the challenge?

The challenge takes place between May 20 and May 27, 2023.

What is the prize?

The winner (or winning team) will receive a CAD$3,000 prize. The winner or a member of the winning team will also receive a paid internship opportunity at Evident.

How much does it cost to enter?

Nothing! The Evident Challenge is free!

Can I start working on the challenge before it starts?

No, the questions will be posted on the first day of the challenge.

Are teams eligible to participate?

Yes, the challenge can be done solo or in a team of up to three participants. Please note that if a team wins, only one team member will be eligible for the internship at Evident.

If I win, how will I receive my prize?

The prize will be given out at an award ceremony hosted at our Quebec City office. The winner—or at least one member of the winning team—will be invited to attend.

Rules

  1. Age
    You understand and acknowledge that you must be at least eighteen (18) years old at the time you register for the Evident Challenge to be eligible to win.
  2. Localization
    You must be a Canadian resident or have a valid Canadian study permit from the date of your registration to the competition completion date.
  3. Registration

    Registration for the Evident Challenge will open on or around Month Day, 2023 at time and will end on or around Month Day, 2023 at time UTC.
    When registering, you must submit the following information in order to participate in the contest:
    • Name
    • Email: Used exclusively by Evident to send participants information about the challenge.
    • Valid email address
    • Current residence address
    • GitHub user name
    • School and program of study
    • Curriculum vitae
  4. Challenge Structure
    The competition will include questions from all levels of difficulty to enable students at different levels of advancement in their programs to participate and have fun doing so.
  5. Problems
    The theme of this competition is “Seeing Is Solving.” The problems and questions will range from software programming to theory related to Evident’s areas of expertise, such as ultrasound, eddy current, and nondestructive testing inspection techniques. There may also be physics and mathematics questions. Questions about different programming frameworks, algorithmic optimization, IT security, artificial intelligence, Evident’s own patented algorithms, and data interpretation may be asked.
  1. Award Ceremony and Winners
    An award ceremony will be held in Quebec City. The winner (or at least one member of the winning team) will be invited to receive the prize. The winner must agree to share their name and their image that will be taken at the award ceremony as described in the Terms and Conditions of Participation in the Evident Challenge.
  2. Prize
    A total amount of CAD$3,000 will be awarded to the winner as well as an internship in software development at our Quebec or Montreal facility. One internship paid in full by Evident Canada will be offered. Splitting of the prize will be at the discretion of the team members. Only students that provide a proof of school attendance can win the prize.
  3. Qualification
    Participants’ answers will be collected, and automatically corrected using the challenge platform. A linter will be used; clean code and clean architecture will be considered. Our judges will then manually correct the best automated results (10%) to determine the final ranking. The ranking will be published on the website with the nicknames provided by the participants.
  4. Terms and Conditions
    The Terms and Conditions document must be accepted by the participant to be eligible to win. Anyone who accepts the Terms and Conditions and completes the subscription form can participate in the challenge.
  5. Solution Validation
    The points attributed to problems and answers will be shared at the beginning of the competition. All correction criteria and automated tests will be empirically determined and measurable. The final selection of winners will be at the sole discretion of Evident and will be subject to the Terms and Conditions of the Evident Challenge.
    Automated Tests
    All answered will be corrected automatically. Information or details about the correction method that will be use will be presented in the problem description.
    Code Smells
    Tools such as a linter and code analyzer will be used to analyze the quality of the code submitted.
    Performances
    Some answers may be subjected to performance tests to determine the best answer to be fair to all participants.
