The Evident Discovery Center at The University of Arizona Department of Pharmacology provides students, faculty, and researchers with hands-on access to cutting-edge microscopy and imaging equipment, helping to advance critical work in disease research across genomics, proteomics, biochemistry, pharmacology, and cellular and molecular biology.

In the core imaging facility, researchers can use the Evident FLUOVIEW™ FV4000 confocal laser scanning microscope for high-precision quantitative imaging and the Evident APEXVIEW™ APX100 benchtop fluorescence microscope for expert-quality research imaging and analysis.

The Evident Discovery Center at The University of Arizona Department of Pharmacology expands access to technologies previously unexplored in certain research applications. It supports a dynamic research environment that provides exceptional education and training for medical students and graduate and postdoctoral biomedical scientists.

“In my lab, we have always been traditional confocal users and were skeptical of the quality and speed of a benchtop fluorescence imaging system. I am happy to report that we have been nothing but impressed with the APX100. It has truly transformed our immunohistochemical imaging workflow. The image quality has been outstanding, rivaling our traditional confocal images, and the system is very user-friendly. Further, the semi-automation and fast acquisition speed allow for whole-section and even near-whole-tissue imaging, bringing a new larger and integrated spatial dimension to our analysis and the questions we are asking.”

“One of our recent projects focuses on how membrane trafficking mediators regulate mitochondrial dynamics and mitophagy. The kinds of subcellular interactions we are interested in require sensitive, high-resolution confocal imaging. We have had excellent results with the FV4000. It allows us to reproducibly image events localized to mitochondrial membranes, as well as interrogate mitochondrial network structure. The FV4000’s high dynamic range is particularly beneficial for simultaneous imaging of multiple targets with variable intensities. This work holds promise for advancing our understanding of inflammatory bowel disease and similar pathologies.”
